Poem of the Week
Insomnia
Carole Barley (Vienna)

It’s 3 a.m. and the wine is all gone,
just me and a sticky glass, because you know,
it’s the roads that do it.

Motorways are black serpents.
I have seen oncoming lights
and know the adverts lie.

I have turned fatalistic,
keep repeating your farewell words
into these empty hands.

Speed should be shared.
We are both used to far-too-fast,
know our combined stopping distances.

Be safe, take care.
I should have said I love you.
Sleep won't come.
